It’s 9AM and the city is alive with hustle and bustle from the streets. You can hear the sound of the metal shutters of the retail stores being unlocked and rolled up amid the morning chatter from the various coffee shops. Cars in traffic are honking, hot coffee is being stirred and sipped, people are running to catch the bus, birds stand on rooftops chirping, the sun shines of amber radiance from the horizon…

It’s morning in downtown Kuala Lumpur and amid the rush hour havoc, two soul mates potter around the city embracing the beauty around them and in each other. The surrounding chaos is reduced to nothing more than a whisper because they have eyes for only each other, and nothing else matters. For today they celebrate their love for each other. They stroll, they embrace, they dance… from the busy streets to the tranquil forest… it’s a beautiful day.

Bambi Cantrell In Malaysia

After many months of waiting, Bambi Cantrell is finally here in Malaysia! Bambi is renowned as among the top 10 wedding and portrait photographers in the world, and it is a huge honor for us to have her here so close to home.

I attended Bambi’s press conference today at Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur and it is a welcome sight to witness the overwhelming hunger for knowledge that our local photographers have towards the art and craft of wedding and portrait photography. Bambi was very gracious in providing her insights and opinions to the many questions proposed by the attendees. Indeed, I felt that Bambi was sharing through her heart and her wealth of experiences through the many years in her career as a photographer, and this is what I would call “true sharing”.

I will be attending Bambi’s workshops and masterclasses for the next 3 days and I really look forward to the experience I will be having from spending time with such an amazing photographer. Oh by the way, the photo above was taken with my iPhone hehe…

elaine & alvin

Elaine & Alvin are an easy-going couple who held their wedding ceremony in their beautiful home in Setia Alam and their reception in Concorde Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. During the gate-crashing ceremony, the team of bridesmaids guarded their “territory” zealously to make sure that Alvin did not get into the bride’s house so easily. Unperturbed, Alvin brought along his troop of groomsmen to back him up, and they were up for any challenge given to them! I’ve gotta say that, out of all the weddings I’ve shot before, Elaine & Alvin’s wedding ceremony had the most bridemaids and groomsmen ever! Just how many you ask? Let’s just say that there were more than enough for 2 soccer teams hehe….

Chooi Yiang & Zee

Chooi Yiang and Zee celebrated their wedding day on 31st December and I could not have asked for a better way to end 2011 than to have been there for them as their wedding photographer. Chooi Yiang’s radiant smile and laughter lights up every room that she walks into and I think it’s a match made in heaven when she chose to marry the cool and witty Zee! The couple is very much in love, with the warmth of their affections for one another putting a big smile on my face every time I see them.

WPPM Conference 2011

So the WPPM (Wedding and Portrait Photographers Malaysia) Conference 2011 came and went. It was held in Segi College Kota Damansara this year and we had photography heavy weights Rocco Ancora and Daniel Capobianco (no pun intended on the “heavy weight” there Daniel hehe…) joining us as guest speakers.

It was a four-day event this year, with the first day dedicated to the opening of the event and the live print judging. To many participants, the live print judging was the highlight of the event because everyone had the invaluable chance to listen to the constructive critiques given by the judges. As photographers, what better way is there for us to learn and to grow but to have our work evaluated by industry leaders? One of the comments that kept arising during the live judging was how some participants of the print competition have overworked their images with post production. As Daniel Capobianco puts it, “learn and master Photoshop, and use less of it”. Indeed less is more. Simplicity rocks!

The second, third, and fourth day of the conference was jam-packed with classes and live shoots. Needless to say, everyone in the conference, from the committee members to the participants, to the trade partners, were busy running around all the time. There was just so much knowledge being imparted by the many speakers in a very little short span of time.

Yours truly had a chance to step up to the plate as well as a guest speaker on the fourth day of the conference. My topic was “Creating your best presentation” and I shared with the audience on how I embarked on photography, the style of shooting that I love, how to present your photos on slideshows and the music that goes with it, and my most recent body of work. I also managed to touch base on wedding photography and showed a couple of slideshows with my favourite photos.

The fourth day of the conference also saw the closing of the conference and awards ceremony for the print competition. To top it all off, the conference ended with a dance-off among the committee members and then the guest speakers in the auditorium. What a night to remember

In retrospect, I really gotta say that I had a blast giving my talk in the auditorium, meeting new people, reuniting with old mates, and doing the dance off on the stage. However, the most significant thing that I take away from the conference is a sense of direction and the determination to work even harder than before, not just in photography, but in all aspects of life. Sue-May & Kevin are an adorable couple who returned to Malaysia from the UK to have their pre-wedding photo shoot done at Sue-May’s idyllic hometown in Port Dickson. It was obvious right from the get-go that we were in for a treat because this was one couple that is totally in love with each other, fun-loving, and easy-going! We had such a good time with Sue-May & Kevin during the shoot that by the end of it, we just wished it could have lasted a little bit longer hehe…

Geetha & Guna

I photographed Geetha and Guna’s engagement last year at the quaint Carcosa Seri Negara. How time flies! I recently shot their actual wedding day, and just like all the previous Indian weddings that I’ve shot preceding this, Geetha and Guna’s wedding was splashed with lotsa colours and wedding details! It never fails to amaze me how intricate Indian weddings are. It was certainly nice to meet the lovely couple again after our shoot last year, and this wedding shoot just puts a the cherry on top of a perfect cake.
