This was a wedding assignment with a couple of firsts for me. It was the first time for me shooting a bride whose roots trace back to South Africa. It was also a first time for me shooting a destination wedding that was held in Kuala Lumpur itself, because instead of flying to the destination of the wedding, the wedding came to us! David is originally from Canberra and Vanessa is originally from South Africa, and they both live in Melbourne. They had guests from Australia, South Africa, Japan, and Korea, so no one was local except for the photography and make up teams.
We certainly enjoyed shooting the wedding of this fun-loving couple and there was many heart-felt moments of laughter, tears, and joy. It was the first time I witnessed the South African cultural way of walking the bride to the ceremony. When Vanessa reached the church grounds, she was accompanied by her family with singing and dancing as they made their way indoors.
It also struck me how well this couple complements each other. David is the calm, collected, funny one and Vanessa is the more outgoing and chatty one who loves to laugh.
We were also very grateful for the great weather throughout the wedding day despite the slight rain that greeted us in the evening right before dinner started, because just a a couple of weeks prior to their wedding day, Malaysia was pretty much engulfed in thick haze. So glad that we managed to get photos at Troika with the Petronas Twin Towers visible in the background!
